Approach

Approach to Forensic Services

In forensic contexts, my role is an educator to the court — translating complex psychological findings into clear, relevant, and accessible opinions that support informed legal decision-making.

I approach each matter with neutrality, analytical rigor, and careful attention to the specific legal questions at issue. My work involves comprehensive record review, integration of collateral information, structured professional judgment, and the appropriate use of empirically supported assessment tools. Opinions are clearly reasoned, transparent, and grounded in defensible practices and communicated to the court using a relevancy-based approach.

Forensic services are provided through Forensic Psychology Kingston, a division of Centre Wellness.

Approach to Clinical Services

Therapy can help individuals reduce the severity and frequency of mental health symptoms, improve relationships, strengthen resiliency, and promote healthy change. Dr. Todd's approach to therapy is primarily driven by a psychodynamic theoretical perspective. This means that the understanding of human behaviour and functioning is strongly rooted in early relationships and that these experiences shape how individuals make sense of themselves, others, and the world in general. Together, Dr. Todd and her clients explore past and present relational patterns and how they contribute to current problems or concerns. Additionally, she focuses on the role of emotion and experience in the process of change.

Dr. Todd's overall therapeutic approach is integrative and dependent on the needs and preferences of the client. For instance, she may incorporate principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to assist a client in developing more effective coping skills to deal with workplace stress, or mindfulness interventions to help manage symptoms of anxiety. Dr. Todd has specialized training and experience in the treatment of trauma, utilizing approaches such as Cognitive Processing Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). She also incorporates bottom-up approaches to address somatic re-experiencing of trauma-related sensations that contribute to the perpetuation of maladaptive behaviours.

Importantly, Dr. Todd is sensitive to issues of diversity. She appreciates the significance of culture and the role it plays in how we understand and experience the world. After determining the client's primary need area, Dr. Todd and her client work together to develop a plan for treatment that is most beneficial for the client. In this sense, therapy is considered a collaborative process that is frequently examined and adjusted as needed
